Chasing Our Goals

In a “Daily Discipline” message on Wednesday, August 24th, Brain Kight wrote the following: “To enter the arena is to give your dream a chance. It also introduces the terrifying risk of losing your precious dream. This is the nature of the arena and why so few people are willing to enter it.” A significant amount of people avoid chasing their dreams in fear of it not working out the way they envision. People who eventually reach their vision of success, however, are willing to take risks, fail, and learn on the journey. How do successful people chase their goals? Below are ways to take action:

  1. Talk to Others: One way to start creating action is by talking with others who have achieved similar goals. Find out where they started, what actions they took, and what challenges they encountered. Learning from others who have achieved similar goals inspires us to chase our own.
  2. Plan Out the Time: Lack of time often derails people from attempting their goals because they’re unsure how they can fit it all in. Plan out short amounts of time each day or week dedicated exclusively to the goal. People who compound their planned out time eventually reach their goals.
  3. Stack Small Actions: When we think about reaching significant goals, we often pressure ourselves into taking big, bold actions that take significant time. This isn’t true. Taking small actions and stacking them over time will eventually lead to reaching a goal.
  4. Avoid Strict Timelines: Setting very strict timelines only leads to disappointment. Set the goal and a general timeline, but allow things to change and evolve as the process takes shape.
  5. Get Feedback and Support: If a goal is really important to you, it’s critical to get feedback on the process. Ask other people how they would reach the goal, if they think you’re taking the appropriate actions, and to support you on the journey.

We’ve all had a vision in our lives and failed to act on it. Some of it is fear of failure, time commitment, or the energy to take it on. Focus on entering the arena with small actions and stack those over time to eventually reach significant goals.

What is your process for chasing your vision and goals?
